  Hot Tips on Test Preparation

Tests are a source of stress for many who struggle with test preparation. If you're among those who have trouble with test taking, here are some hot tips to higher scores on your next test. If you already know some of these tricks, then consider this a refresher as it is always good to rehash good tips especially when it comes to test preparation.

Exam prep is an often overlooked element of test taking. There have been several studies that reveal even if you have sufficiently studied, your test score will depend on how you prepared for the test. Beginning with getting a good night's rest, here are some test prep tips.

  1. Sleep well. A good nights rest is very important to brain function. A quality sleep is just as important as the amount of sleep received. Deficiencies in sleep will affect response time more than accuracy.
  2. Be prepared. Try to determine the type of questions that will be on the test. The more you know about the test, the more you'll study the right things.
  3. Be on time for the test. Try to be on schedule for test day and not be rushing around. Time pressure adds to test-anxiety and that is bad for test scores.
  4. Stear clear of anxious testers. Anxiety is catchy. Don't let someone's unpreparedness rub off on you. Don't sit next to them. Move to another seat if you have to.
  5. Take deep breathes. This helps to ease the nervousness and the tension. Very helpful especially if the majority of your grade depends on this one test. Continue to breathe deep throughout the test. This will help relax you and help the oxygen levels in your brain to help you think clearly.
  6. Hone in on specific test taking skills. Remember the following:

  • Focusing on one question reduces anxiety. It's easy to get overwhelmed with everything on the test at first glance. However, complete focus on one question will help you to get through it and allow you to focus on the correct answer.
  • If you're allowed to write notes, make sure to write down any information you think you may forget. This is extremely helpful if you have to "cram" before the test. Writing something down helps you to remember it as well.
  • Try to know your tester. Be careful of ambiguous statements, questions and answers. Test creators try to catch undetailed test takers with answers that are close in appearance.
  • Make sure to answer all questions. If you are at an absolute loss on a question and don't know the answer, give it your best guess. At least there is a chance you may get it right. If you don't answer it at all, it will assuredly be wrong. With multiple choice, try to eliminate as many unlikely answers as possible and choose the remaining ones. Use a process of elimination. There is a chance you will get some right if you don't know the answer.
  • Have someone give you a practice exam to prepare for your test. Make up flash cards and have someone give you fill in the blank questions through statement questions.
  • Repeat in your mind and say aloud over and over again to your self the exam material you think will be on the test. It will help to write it down to memorize it.

In the end, the best method for test preparation and to properly prepare for an exam is to study. If you study and apply the above test taking principals you will greatly increase your chances of getting a good score. The proper test preparation can go a long way to keeping a high grade point average so learn how to do it wisely.
